(left) The Ace Hotel in Chicago pays homage to
its hometown in several ways, including the Eaves
dining room, which invokes a sense of Ludwig Mies
van der Rohe's modernism that is seen throughout
the city. (below) The Tryp Hotel by Wyndham in
Dubai features a coworking space called NEXT
where guests and locals can work for a fee.

bar that serves up coffee and alcohol.
Marriott's new millennial-focused Moxy brand features
a spacious gathering hub with a circular banquet, four-top
tables, and two-top tables to suit individual laptop
users, oversized velvet lounge chairs, long communal
workbenches, and even a foosball table. The flexible
configurations and comfortable style cater to both work
and leisure, solo guests, and small groups.
"One thing we've found to be universal is that travelers
and small groups are looking for more communal spaces to
work, play, and dine through all periods of the day," says
Ian Carter, president of global development, architecture,
design, and construction at Hilton in Washington, D.C.
"There's this increasing demand for social connection, and
so we're rethinking how we design our public spaces."
While the Ace and Moxy don't charge guests or
nonguests to work in their lobbies, other hotels are setting
up more formal coworking spaces as a way to draw in more
users-and more revenue.
Dubai's Tryp hotel by Wyndham, for example, has
created the coworking space NEST where guests can work
alongside locals for a fee. The space offers up open seating,
meeting rooms, breakout spaces, Skype pods, and a stocked
library. Nonguests using the coworking space can gain
access to the hotel's various amenities, including the gym
and the pool, as part of their membership.
"There's a natural confluence between coworking and
hotels," Tom Carroll, head of EMEA and UK corporate
research at JLL in London, said in a recent interview. "The
hospitality industry is all about providing high-quality
service and amenities to create a good user experience-
and that's what today's workforce is increasingly coming
to expect from the spaces they work in, whether that's a
traditional office, a hotel lobby, or a coworking outlet."

Retail's Next Stand
While coworking spaces are just now finding their footing
in hotels, retailers have been there for years. Their
presence can often help establish the vibe a hotel is trying
to achieve. For example, when McCleese and her Gensler
team began designing The Post Oak Hotel in Houston,
they knew they were going for ultimate luxury. The AAA
Five Diamond Hotel features a dark and cozy brandy and
cigar lounge, a bright and cheery high-end lunch spot,
and a half-a-million-dollar chandelier in the lobby. The
jewel in this hotel's crown, however, is a one-of-a-kind
Rolls-Royce retail experience. The two-story showroom
features a display where new cars are featured for those
passing by on the street or inside the hotel to ogle. And
