That is the consensus of a number of local experts who deal with the island’s group travel market. Like the rest of Hawaii, Maui was hit hard in 2009 by the combination of the poor economy, the reluctance of corporate planners and their bosses to greenlight destinations perceived to be resorts or luxurious, and a decrease in airlift, made worse by the spring 2008 bankruptcy of two of the state’s important carriers (see sidebar page 75).
