EDITOR’S LETTER The Authority on Meetings & Incentives Clean Sweep here’s no question about it, life is a dirty business. Anyone who wants proof of that need look no further than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which has collected and reported data on the generation and disposal of waste in the United States for more than 30 years. They use this information to measure the success of waste reduction and recycling programs across the country. The most recent facts and figures do not present a pretty picture. Americans generate about 250 million tons of trash annually. But there is a ruby to be found among the rubble. On average, Americans recycle and compost 1.5 pounds of our individual waste generation of 4.5 pounds per person per day. Of course, that’s just a drop in the bucket—especially if the American in question is attending a meeting. According to the Green Meetings Industry Council, the average meeting produces 20 pounds of waste per person, per day. This month’s issue has a green theme highlighting the efforts of meeting planners and the hospitality community to address this issue. Our cover story looks at how Oracle made sustainability a core standard for an annual meeting of 40,000 attendees. Other features take a look at how green initiatives are popping up in two unexpected places—golf courses and gaming destinations. It’s evidence of how the entire meetings and hospitality industry is embracing eco-friendly standards. For our part, Successful Meetings, along with sister publications Business Travel News and MeetingNews, have become the Platinum Media Sponsors of the 2010 Green Travel Summit which will be held at the Willard Intercontinental in Washington, DC June 10–11. The event will assemble up to 350 of the leading experts in green travel in a forum for information sharing, best practice overviews, and successful case studies. Targeted attendees include corporate travel executives, association executives, travel suppliers, corporate meeting and incentive planners, procurement directors, car rental companies, private jet companies, commercial airlines, hotels, as well as destination marketing organizations and reservation systems.
