And when the new 1,005-room JW Marriott Indianapolis opens that same month, the convention center will be directly connected to 12 hotels with 4,700 guest rooms—more than any other in the U.S., according to Don Welsh, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Authority. “It allows us to go after groups that we can’t now,” says Welsh. Having upped the size of the CVA’s sales office in Washington, DC, to three people, he adds, “We are targeting associations in the educational, medical, scientific, engineering, and life sciences fields.” Indianapolis already handles several major groups and events.
