News & Analysis > Associations DMAI Focuses on Tech Habits of Planners meetings. Close behind were socialnetworking applications such as Facebook and MySpace; 32 percent say they use it frequently or occasionally, while another 26 percent say they are interested in using it. But lack of interest was high as well: 42 percent expressed no interest in using social networking in any capacity. On the heels of these results, DMAI launched a series of free webinars aimed at planners. The first, titled “Hotel Contracts: Balancing Legal Issues with Business Considerations,” took place on April 23. It can be viewed on demand at www.destinationsshowcase.com. A second webinar will take place in August or September; attendees may earn CMP credits by participating in any of these webinars. —Elizabeth West In late March, Destination Marketing Association International (formerly IACVB) released findings from research that gauged meeting, convention, and trade show professionals’ interest in using popular and emerging communication technologies for themselves or for their events. Among survey participants—the 500 planners attending DMAI’s February Destinations Showcase in Washington DC—webinars were the most widely utilized technology, with 58 percent of respondents saying they participate in them frequently or occasionally. Further, 27 percent who don’t participate currently are interested in doing so. “It’s not surprising that planners have a strong interest in webinars,” says Jim Duda, managing director of Destinations Showcase. “Meeting planning is one of the busiest professions, and many planners don’t have time to travel if it’s not for their own programs. Webinars allow everyone the opportunity to participate in quality education.” The next most popular technology among responding planners was text messaging, with 34 percent using it frequently or occasionally and another 20 percent interested in using it. On the flip side, fully 45 percent say they have no interest in using text messaging for themselves or for the benefit of their Prognosis: Experience highly accurate, up-to-the-minute, complimentary services guaranteed to maximize your conference attendance.
