SCOTLAND > THE REST OF SCOTLAND One of Glasgow’s draws is an extensive array of art museums, many of which are free to enter THE REST OF SCOTLAND TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF SCOTLAND’S FORGOTTEN DESTINATIONS By David Block here is a tendency to look at Scotland and see just two destinations: Edinburgh and The Old Course at St. Andrew’s, in Fife. And while Scotland’s capital city has much to recommend it—royal venues, worldclass cuisine, a rich and vibrant culture, and one of the finest resort hotels in the world, Gleneagles—there are other parts of England’s northern neighbor that are worth your time. Start with the second city, Glasgow, which suffers slightly in its rivalry with Edinburgh by having no immediately recognizable graphic image. It began catching up in 1990 when it was chosen as the year’s “European City of Culture.” There was a sudden realization that this was one of the U.K.’s finest Victorian cities, abounding with grand architecture, imaginative restaurants, and potent nightlife, with the added attractions of some of the best shopping in T the U.K. and a string of cultural jewels. It’s home to the lauded Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet and has over 20 museums that are free to the public. Twenty miles from Glasgow on the spectacular Loch Lomond stands the imposing Cameron House Hotel, which offers archery, golf, interactions with birds of prey, and meetings facilities with shockingly distracting views. Farther north, 15 minutes from Inverness Airport in the Highlands, stands Achnagairn House, an imposing Edwardian mansion that eases open its elegant doors for exclusive incentives, meetings, and teambuilding exercises. The Scots weren’t so welcoming when the English army came knocking in the 17th century intent on stealing the Stone of Destiny at Scone Palace, just north of Perth. The palace may no longer have its stone, but it does have one of Scotland’s finest collections of French and Scottish decorative art. Huge Gothic oak doors open to a dining room that can seat 110 in baronial splendor and where guests can dine off Wedgwood armorial china with King’s Pattern cutlery.
