Remington hung on to the - into
the mid-'s, mainly, I suspect, because
of silhouette shooters. During that time,
the company upgraded the original model
both functionally and aesthetically. The
barrel was lengthened to  inches, the
maximum allowed for Unlimited class in
silhouette competition. Remington also
chambered it for the mm  cartridge,
an excellent choice for silhouettes and
medium-size game, along with proven biggame hunting rounds like the . Win.
and . Rem. The later - variations
provided a low-cost solution to handgun
hunters who wanted a super-accurate
long-range pistol for game larger than
varmints. The longer-barreled - was
also chambered for the widely available
. Rem. cartridge and beautified with
a laminated wood stock. With a modern
pistol scope, it was deadly on small game
at extended ranges. This time around, I
was smart enough to acquire one before
Remington discontinued production.
In my years of shooting handgun silhouettes, I never saw a Ruger Hawkeye
on the firing line. I have to believe that
somewhere, sometime, someone fired 
rounds from the Ruger pistol at the steel
critters, but since only , Hawkeyes
were ever produced, maybe not. In the
book Ruger & His Guns, by R.L. Wilson,
Ruger gun designer Harry Sefried states
that he and Mike Walker at Remington
used to kid each other about coming out
with "the two least popular pistols in the
history of handguns." That may or may
not be true, but it must have been believed
at Ruger, because the Hawkeye line was
closed after just two years of production.
I would be hard pressed to argue that
Remington should again produce a version of the -. The company kept the
production lines operable for more than 
years, so it's not like the gun didn't receive
a fair shake. But I would love to see Ruger
bring back the Hawkeye line, even if it is
with a limited production run to test the
demand. I suspect initial sales would be
pretty good, but maybe I'm just fantasizing
over how to recover from a missed opportunity. There's certainly a market for the
"right" single-shot handgun as Thompson/
Center Arms proved with the Contender
a few years after the Fireball and Hawkeye
were introduced (see sidebar). Nonetheless, I have to tip my hat to both Remington and Ruger for pioneering the modern
hunting handgun, even if I have to say
adios to a couple of great ones. ah

T/C's Modern Hand Cannons
By Aaron Carter, Managing Editor, American Rifleman

T

o say the Thompson/Center Arms Contender altered the view of hunters
regarding the awareness of a handgun's capability for their pastime would
be a gross understatement. Introduced in 1967, the break-action, single-shot
Contender is absent the performance-robbing barrel-cylinder gap that prevents
revolvers from harnessing a cartridge's full potential. Propellant gases cannot bypass
the obturated projectile until it has exited the muzzle, and when combined with more
complete propellant consumption due to extended barrel lengths, the result is high
velocitiy for flatter trajectory.
The Contender was (and can still be) chambered for a wide range of handgun
and rifle cartridges, including exotic ones such as the .256 Win. Mag., 6.5 TCU and
.357-44 B&D. Despite Contender barrels being about half the length of those on
rifles, impressive velocities are achievable with traditional rifle cartridges and marked
increases are probable in handgun chamberings. In fact, years ago when I tested the
now-discontinued Hornady 140-grain XTP .357 Mag. load in a custom Encore with a
143⁄4-inch barrel-the Contender's younger, stouter sibling-the bullet attained more
than 1900 fps and produced more than 1,100 ft.-lbs. of energy. Several whitetails
succumbed to this combination.
Best of all, swapping barrels on the Contender requires only the removal of two
forearm screws and the hinge pin. The zeroed optic remains attached to the barrel, so
no adjustment is needed for the change. One could potentially hunt treetop-clinging
squirrels, prairie dogs at distance and bull elk with the same handgun, simply by
changing barrels. Such versatility is simply unmatched.
The Contender's petite frame is its sole detraction. To safely chamber more potent
centerfire cartridges like the .308 Win. and .30-06 Sprg., T/C unveiled the Encore
in 1998. To me, the Encore encompasses all the elements necessary for handgun
hunting, even at longer ranges, including: tight lockup; consistent, crisp trigger pulls;
remarkable accuracy; and powerful, flat-shooting chamberings. Custom Encore barrel
makers such as SSK Industries (sskindustries.com) can chamber a premium Douglas
or Shilen barrel for most cartridges, including the hand-jarring .416 Rigby and .470 NE!
My personal favorites for the Encore are the .223 Rem., 6.5 TCU, .250 Savage
Ack. Imp., .270 Win., .300 Whisper, and .35-06 JDJ-all of which have contributed
venison to my freezer and to those of the less fortunate. He who ventures afield with
an Encore or Contender is using the best platform possible for handgun hunting, and
in time will be rewarded for doing so. tcarms.com
