TECHNICAL I HAVE THIS OLD GUN … Smith & Wesson Second Model Hand Ejector GUN: SMITH & WESSON SECOND MODEL HAND EJECTOR CALIBER: .44 SPL. CONDITION: 95 PERCENT (NRA EXCELLENT) MANUFACTURED: APRIL 27, 1929 VALUE: $2,050 mith & Wesson Hand Ejectors are some of the most recognizable double-action revolvers ever made. Even though their design emanated from the turn of the last century, they epitomize the concept of what a modern double-action revolver should look like. There are four versions of the Hand Ejector Model. The First Model Hand Ejector, popularly known as the “Triple Lock,” came out in 1908 and was built on what eventually became known as the N-frame. It was the rst S&W to feature the now-familiar under-barrel shroud that protects the extractor rod. But its real appeal was a series of three cylinder locks: a springloaded catch between the end of the yoke and the tip of the extractor shroud, a center pin indentation in the frame that secured the cylinder, and a third catch in front of the extractor. Smith & Wesson soon realized S that this over-engineering made the gun too expensive to produce, so it did away with the unnecessary lock-up between the yoke and the extractor shroud and eliminated the under-barrel lug. Although still retaining the same rugged internal mechanism of the Triple Lock, this trimmed-down revolver became the Second Model Hand Ejector. It was the most proli c of all the Hand Ejector models, with 34,624 produced between 1914 and 1940. Subsequent Hand Ejectors were the Third Model, which brought back the under-barrel shroud, and the Fourth Model, also known as the Model 24 or 1950 Target. But it is the Second Model Hand Ejector that one is most likely to encounter. The Second Model was produced in a nickeled or blued nish with color-casehardened hammer and trigger, but both had checkered walnut stocks handnumbered to the serial number of the gun. Barrel lengths were 4", 5" or 6½". The most common chambering was .44 Spl., although .38-40 Win., .44-40 Win., and .45 Colt were produced, but these last three are rare enough to carry a 200 percent premium. The standard Second Model had a grooved topstrap and high-blade front sight, but a Target model carries a 50 percent premium. The Second Model shown here was shipped April 27, 1929, to Neilson Radio & Sporting Goods in Phoenix, Ariz. One can only wonder what its purpose was in those early “Valley of the Sun” years in that region of the still-untamed Southwest. The gun retains 95 percent of its original nish, and as such, is worth $2,050 according to the Blue Book of Gun Values. Interestingly, it was purchased for $345 in the late 1980s, evidence of just how much early, pristine Smiths have escalated in value. —RICK HACKER Photos by author 112 N OVEMBER 2009 WWW.AMERICANRIFLEMAN.ORG http://WWW.AMERICANRIFLEMAN.ORG
