EDITOR'S LETTER

he semi-automatic pistol on
this month's cover is a gun
that, based on my early experiences with polymer-frame, centerfire semi-automatic pistols from
Sturm, Ruger & Co. in the 1990s, I
thought I would never see. The SR45
is so many things the KP95D was
not. Ergonomically sound, possessing an excellent striker-fired
trigger system, svelte, even for its
chambering, the SR45 is one of the
most manageable double-stack,
polymer-frame .45 ACP service
pistols I have taken to the range in
recent years. On firing, it remains
anchored firmly in the hand; it is
neither slippery nor twists away
under recoil. This is not an indictment of Ruger pistols of a previous
era, but rather an indictment of
the era. The seemingly primitive
molding technology, the limitations
of polymers then available to makers, and the need to keep shapes
in the molding process somewhat
simple, all contributed to guns
that are bulky compared to more
modern designs. A shooting buddy
of mine disagrees vehemently with
me about the KP95D. He believes it
is the best pistol he has ever fired;
hand filling and reliable, it is a gun
he shoots well, and keeps by his
bedside to this day.
You must recall that in the mid1990s, the use of polymer in pistols
was mostly a European affair. It
began with the large, yet innovative,
Heckler & Koch VP70z pistol. The
Glock followed and proved to be a
game changer of no small proportion. Save for Glocks, H&Ks (including the USP), Smith & Wesson
Sigmas, Grendels and a few others,
most early polymer-frame pistols
were adaptations of metal-frame

guns with large-almost oversize-
polymer frames, mated to slides of
previously existing designs.
Introduced in 2005, the harbinger
of the modern Ruger polymerframe gun was the P345, a singlestack .45 ACP with a polymer
frame and well-checkered stock
panels. Next came the LC series
of small, concealable pistols, and
now Ruger's SR series is a strikerfired family of guns, designed from
the ground up around a polymer
frame. That line holds to Ruger's
model of providing good value
through the features delivered, and
now it can be had in .45 ACP.
With modern molding technology, so much more is possible today.
Frame walls can be thinner even
than the dimensions of a metal-frame
gun. Checkering and texturing the
polymer frame are not only practical,
but affordable. Ask any company that
cuts metal for its frames what the cost
of fine frontstrap checkering is on a
CNC machine. Changing the way the
gun fits in the hand is as simple as
reversing the backstrap insert. When
working with polymer frames, those
small ergonomic touches can be a
part of the plan with little additional
expenditure. The price of the mold
may be more, but with sufficient
volume of production, it's less costly
for the consumer.
When it comes to guns, the first
use of polymer for major components was in the Remington
Nylon 66, a gun that, oddly, eventually became too expensive to be
competitive. Indeed, the Nylon 66
was an example of "Better living
through chemistry," thanks to the
then owner of Remington, DuPont.
And the polymer-frame handguns
of today, including the SR45, are
indeed better than those that came
before them.

P95DC

Sincerely,
