General UpGrades, ammo and modifications U.s. m1 Garand
From Mark Hartman: “Very few M1 rifles can be found in factory original condition from WW II. The U.S. Government ran a constant rebuild program on this rifle during the war and up to the 1970’s. Barrels and stocks as well as components such as rear sights were replaced or refinished. It has been estimated that almost 98% of all M1s went through this rebuild program at least once. At James River, we do exactly what the Government Arsenal did, only we take much more time and care.” CMP is still one of the best sources for Garands and you’ll find James River on Commercial Row at Camp Perry. Many customers simply purchased their rifle at the CMP store and dropped them off with James River during the national matches. Similar to the Service Rifle rules, vintage rifles must maintain their “as issued” appearance. Criterion barrels with button rifling and hand-lapped with the same OD measurements are typical upgrades allowed under match rules. No Jewell triggers or the like are allowed and competitors are not allowed to glass-bed the stock. However, replacement stocks are allowed and tight tolerances when inletting help improve accuracy. Clips: Competitors should be wary of bad clips for the Garand. If you find some good quality clips, buy them while you can. Ammo: Greek HSP ammo has proven to be accurate and cost-effective. Hornady ammunition is very accurate and a little more expensive. Reloaders take note: Says Hartman: “Gas guns are hard on brass. If not resized properly, case-head failure can be catastrophic. CMP matches issue the same ammo to competitors, which levels the playing field.” Sights: Similar to stocks, competitors must use the standard battle sight, which also benefit from a rebuild with tighter tolerances. The general approach is to gauge the cylinders and oprods with a tool similar to a “GO, NO-GO” gauge like the historic Springfield Armory did until closed in 1968. U.s. m1 carbine
From Mark: “It’s getting harder to locate carbines. During World War II, the U.S. produced more M1 Carbines than any other firearm. Originally designed as a sidearm replacement, the carbine became popular because it was light weight and powerful. Never intended to compete with the .30-06 battle rifle, it has been criticized for its lack of stopping power. But when compared to a handgun, it easily wins. “We provide restored carbines in both the original configuration and the more common Type III version with adjustable sights and bayonet lug. For the original variant, we use new production rear sights and bands. On both versions, we provide new, correctly shaped and finished American walnut stocks. Pricing is based on the manufacturer of the receiver. All barrels currently are U.S. GI and are in very good condition. The metal is all refinished in the correct WW II parkerizing. All other parts are original U.S. GI. However, we do not try to match up all the codes.”

Springfield Armory

’03 sprinGfield
A recent purchase of 2,000 ‘03-A3s has created a nice stockpile for their customers. Initially allowed by the CMP in the vintage category, the Springfields out-shot the Garands to the point there were no more Garands competing in the Garand match. This was resolved with the creation of the Springfield match in 2009.

From the Springfield Armory Historic Website: After nearly two centuries of continuous production of rifles and muskets used by America’s military in every war in the nation’s history, the armory closed its gates and fell silent. Begun as a major arsenal under the authority of General George Washington early in the Revolutionary War, the first national armory began manufacturing muskets in 1794. Within decades, Springfield Armory had perfected pioneering manufacturing methods that were critical to American industrialization. Reopened in 1978 as the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, the original arsenal houses the world’s largest collection of historic American military firearms.
