WORTH WATCHING / CONCEPT2WATCH ind an unmet need and fill it. It’ s Marketing 101, but it fairly well sums up how Sarah Beatty struck upon the idea for Green Depot. She was about to give birth to her first child and was unable to find toxic-free supplies for her home and nursery , so Beatty sketched out a plan for a wholesale/retail business focused exclusively on delivering green building supplies and materials to contractors, tradesmen and consumers. Since there was no professional distribution portal for builders, she launched a “one-stop shop portal for green building supplies.” Beatty opened her first retail outlet, Green Depot LIVE (as in living), in February in Manhattan’s Bowery district, some four years after the first of six Green Depot BUILD showrooms debuted. Beatty envisions Green Depot LIVE stores as sustainable home versions of an “interactive Discovery Zone.” Designed for spaces with between 3,500 and 5,000 sq. ft. of selling space, products are displayed within mini-centers that simulate rooms in a home. “Consumers, in a very transparent way, can get their hands on the products,” Beatty says. “They can try things out, learn and make more practical, smart decisions for themselves and their families.” Green Depot BUILD centers are scheduled to open in Albany, N.Y., and Newark, Del., later this year, and the company plans to add more Green Depot LIVE stores in 2010.
