WORTH WATCHING / CONCEPT2WATCH Urban Sole R•sole Kansas City, Mo. Co-owners: Barry and David Pener pecialty high-end shoe stores are common in overseas markets. Brothers Barry and David Pener think the Midwest is ready to join in the fun. The Peners, operators of 35 Harold Pener Man of Fashion stores, opened the first R•sole store in St. Louis two years ago; a second store opened last year in Memphis. The stores offer an ever-changing mix of hip, high-end athletic shoes and sportswear presented in an atmosphere of whimsical retail derring-do. The sneakers themselves are displayed as works of art; stores are deliberately kept dark, but a DMX-controlled LED system creates intense cycles of light focused on the Plexiglas, wall-lined displays. The club vibe extends to marketing. Rather than advertise, R•sole builds word of mouth by hosting press and customer-appreciation parties, complete with DJs and musical artists. Eighty percent of sales are made to male customers, some of whom simply collect (and never wear) the shoes. — Liz Parks S 30
