NSBE - January/February 2008 - (Page 57)

By Nosa Egharevba, NSBE National Alumni Extension Chair THeAEnICHe I NSBE’S NEar FuturE hope this message finds everyone in good form after the Christmas and New Year break. As we prepare for our Annual National Convention in Orlando, Fla., in March, there are a couple of things I would like to talk about with you, my NSBE family. First, Black History Month brings to mind the strides we still need to make in minority representation in private industry, government and academia. We have come a long way from the past and its heroes. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, who stood up to the oppressors regardless of the danger, would be happy with the achievements of the minority population. However, I am also sure they would say that while the present is better than the past, it is not even close to what the future can be. Second, your national, regional and chapter leadership is in the “back nine” of its tenure. As NSBE members, you have the opportunity to engage your elected and appointed board members and find out about their positions, goals and experiences. I encourage you to do this. Those of you who feel you can make a difference as an officer should feel empowered to pursue a leadership position. Those of you who just want to be more informed members should seek out your officials and talk with them. I know the importance of this engagement with leadership is not lost on NSBE and that we will continue to strive for a better future for the entire membership and the minority-owned businesses that look to NSBE for guidance. In closing, the Annual National Convention takes place two months from now, and I trust that the alumni membership has registered in force to go to Orlando to enjoy the many different activities and events, including workshops, certification classes, the career fair, the golf classic, the 5K run, other entertainment, and “NSBE luv.” I look forward to seeing you there. ■ “Those of you who feel you can make a difference as an officer should feel empowered to pursue a leadership position.” www.nsbe.org • january/february 2008 • 57 http://www.nsbe.org
