PrEMiEr PROFILE B y ly n e t t e l o c ke Albert Rodriques of Lehman Brothers Developing Connections around the World eet Albert Rodriques, vice president and head of Global Development Tools for Global Technology Services at Lehman Brothers. That’s an impressive title for an impressive man. Rodriques has 15 years’ experience in software development using various solutions, including J2EE, Web, client server and other object-oriented development technologies. With these tools in hand, he is the go-to guy at Lehman Brothers when tough things need doing. He manages the evaluation, selection, purchase and implementation of a suite of strategic development tools to support the firm’s software development process. Rodriques also led the post-9/11 initiative to secure the firm’s business application assets on its centrally managed servers, providing fail over and data backup strategies. He recently led the creation of the Software Development Lifecycle Primer, a general guide for all Information Technology employees, on required software and tools to effectively support key disciplines of the software development process. Rodriques ensures that all development teams have the essential development tools to meet the company’s software development project needs. Adept at consensus-building, crisis management, problem-solving and negotiating, Rodriques says part of his job is meeting with software vendors and being able to evaluate software accurately. “I am normally handling a number of projects and reviewing the timelines for those projects,” he adds. Lehman Brothers has more than 2,000 business applications worldwide. This means Rodriques interacts with senior- and midlevel professionals at distant locales. His day M Albert Rodriques ensures that all teams have the essential tools to meet the company’s software development project needs. ordinarily starts with teleconferences with internal staff in India or other regions, as well as with global cross-functional teams to discuss projects status. This global workplace is what he most enjoys about his occupation, he says: “I enjoy working with all kinds of people at all levels. “As a teenager in Jamaica, I was always analytical, good with sciences, and had a natural leaning towards the engineering field. Computer science was gaining popularity then, so it was a good fit for me.” He holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of the West Indies and a master’s degree in computer science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Rodriques’ development work does not end with software. He also mentors junior professionals at Lehman Brothers and finds time to support the charity organization Doctors without Borders. When asked for his advice for others pursuing careers in engineering and technology, he remarks, “They should make sure that they have a good appreciation for technology and develop a passion for their area of interest.” Albert Rodriques is a professional who achieves whatever he sets his mind to, a fact to which his colleagues would attest. ■ 42 • march/april 2008 • www.nsbe.org http://www.nsbe.org
