NATIONAL EXECUTIVE BOARD Elected each year at the Annual National Convention, the young engineers and budding engineers of NSBE’s National Executive Board (NEB) take on the critical job of governing the National Society of Black Engineers. Led by the top five National Executive Officers, a.k.a. the NEO, they rise to the task of leading tens of thousands of NSBE members toward academic excellence, cultural responsibility, professional success and a positive impact on community. NSBE’S 2008–2009 THE NEO National Chair Stevenson A. Dunn Jr., 23, last year’s national vice chair, says it was only natural for him to marry his two passions, civil engineering and community service, once he was introduced to NSBE leadership. The Polytechnic Institute of New York University undergrad did volunteer work for several New York-area community organizations before joining the Chapter Executive Board of NSBE’s Polytechnic chapter. Later, during his tenure as regional chair, Region I became NSBE’s first to enroll more than 5,000 members. National Vice Chair Michael E. Johnson Jr., 24, from Altadena, Calif., gives much of the credit to NSBE and the U.S. Air Force Reserves for setting him on the path to realized potential. As an undergrad at Cal State Fullerton, he revived the dormant NSBE chapter as president then moved up to regional leadership, while becoming a stellar student and community servant. He is pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Southern California now, while working as a test engineer for Northrop Grumman Space Technologies. Second-term National Secretary Laura M. Jenkins, 22, is now fulfilling NSBE’s mission in her paid job as well, as a math educator at Outlook University Independent School Network – High School of Engineering, in Milwaukee, Wis. Jenkins is a May 2008 graduate of Clemson University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biosystems engineering and served as NSBE chapter president in 2006–07. Before stepping up to the national level, she served NSBE’s Region II as publications, public relations and telecommunications chair, and as regional secretary. National Treasurer Amal Osman, 23, showed NSBE her leadership skills early, by founding the City on a Hill NSBE Jr. chapter in Boston, Mass., while she was still in high school. Now a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute pursuing a master’s in management and global enterprise, the former Golden Torch PreCollege Initiative Student of the Year is also working as a reliability engineer for Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, a United Technologies subsidiary. She previously served as NSBE national treasurer in 2006–07. National Programs Chair Natasha Joseph, 22, believes NSBE is built on the foundation of successful, sustainable programs, active passionate membership, new and innovative ideas and strong student leaders. As one of those leaders, she intends to aid the Society by starting and maintaining programs that keep members excited about what they can do for NSBE, rather than what NSBE can do for them. Joseph is a biological engineering major at the University of Florida. 16 • september/october 2008 • www.nsbe.org http://www.nsbe.org
