inTernATionAl NEwS O Nigerian Students Celebrate KE-ARO, Nigeria — Oct. 1, 2008 was a wonderful day for Toris Schools NSBE Jr. members, as they gathered to celebrate “Young Engineers Day” and Nigeria’s 48th Anniversary — the West African nation’s Independence Day. The program was kicked off at about 10:15 a.m. by the chapter advisor, Afolabi Ademosu, who gave insights into the who, what, when, where, why and how of NSBE. The chapter members were also made to memorize NSBE’s mission statement. Collegiate mentor Kingsley Udoh anchored the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) career workshop, which exposed students to careers they might pursue, and he strongly emphasized the need to take math and science subjects seriously. The NSBE Jr. members were tutored in how to prepare simple presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint. They also participated in a hands-on design session, the most excit- ing event, in which they built a model of a “NSBE Engineering City” in Africa. Once complete, the city contained features such as a nanotechnology expressway, NSBE Space Centre, Carl Mack Flyover Bridge, Franklin O. Moore Library and Alaina Law Gymnasium. The chapter gives thanks to its mentors: Kinsley Udoh, Usman Sheu, Rapheal and Advisor Afolabi Ademosu. Long live Toris Schools! Long live NSBE!! Long live Nigeria!!! ■ Region III Makes ‘iimpact’ R By Sihle Wilson, NSBE Region III International Committee Chair egion III has embarked on an historic journey. They say great minds think alike, and it truly seemed as though the Fall Regional Conference planning chair, Adyre Mason, and her team were telepathically connected to the mind of the International Committee this year. At their Fall Regional Conference (FRC), Region III hosted a very successful iFair (International Fair), which served as a great platform to launch the International Committee’s Twin Chapter and Consulting Design Olympiad programs. The iFair’s goal was to give U.S.-based chapters the opportunity to partner with International chapters and to learn from each other before FRC, following the guidelines specified in the competition’s packet. Each team then presented a summary of what they learned during the poster competition at FRC. In addition to hosting the iFair, Region III has been making waves in the Caribbean. This past summer, the Region III International Committee chair, Sihle Wilson, had the privilege of representing NSBE during her visit to Trinidad and Tobago. There, she made several contacts with the administrations of the University of the West Indies–St. Augustine Campus and the University of Trinidad and Tobago. As a result of this work, the two schools have given NSBE the go-ahead to charter chapters on their campuses! These babe chapters are now putting together the paperwork to make it official. As NSBE grows, we can expect more great news like this out of Region III! Three Ready!!!!! ■ • january/february www.nsbe.org 2009 • 13 http://www.nsbe.org
