NSBE Annual National Convention Las Vegas, Nev. March 25–29, 2009 Energizing Creativity to Achieve Exponential Growth Rite of Passage: Transitioning from High School to College and Excelling / Hosted by the University of Michigan – Getting ready to head off to college? Congratulations! Making the transition from high school to college can be a little overwhelming. This interactive workshop provides useful information to take with you as you prepare to make that jump to the next level. Saturday, March 28, 2:15 PM–3:30 PM PCI Sister 2 Sister: Real Talk / Hosted by Sankofa Workshops LLC – Mentoring is an important aspect of personal growth and is the most beneficial way to give back to the community. This workshop focuses on the importance of mentoring for females and on creating a long-lasting sisterhood that will benefit its members and others who observe it. Younger workshop participants will hear from the more experienced participants and vice versa. Saturday, March 28, 10:45 AM–12:00 PM PCI Taming Technology: Techtiquette for Cells, E-mails and the Internet / Hosted by Aptima, Inc. – This interactive workshop is designed to educate high school students about the etiquettes of technology, “techtiquettes.” With college admissions officers, scholarship selection committees and potential employers using Facebook and MySpace to learn more about their applicants, it’s important to learn how to tame technology. Saturday, March 28, 2:15 PM–3:30 PM PCI Using Creativity to Lead Your Educational Career / Hosted by Schlumberger – This hands-on, “learning while doing” workshop seeks to give students a passion for learning math and science by empowering them to use knowledge and technology creatively to meet their challenges of tomorrow. Friday, March 27, 2:45 PM–4:00 PM PCI We Built Pyramids, Can We Build a Levee? / Hosted by Sankofa Workshops LLC – This workshop introduces students to architecture and engineering and gives them a brief history of the pyramids of Kemit (Egypt) and modern day Mexico. This is followed by a “Create Your Own Pyramid” activity using LEGOS. Next, the workshop delves into what levees are, what purposes they serve and how they can fail. Finally, students learn steps toward becoming an engineer or architect — problem-solvers for the future. Thursday, March 26, 1:00 PM–2:15 PM PCI www.nsbe.org What’s Goin’ On? / Hosted by Sankofa Workshops LLC – In America, hip hop culture has, in many ways, been ingrained into the fabric of mainstream and popular culture for today’s youth. This workshop engages youth using a hip hop seminar to critically analyze the current state of today’s popular music and the messages they carry, in comparison to earlier forms of hip hop and its origins. The intent is to challenge and encourage young people to question the influence that current mainstream hip hop has over its audience. Thursday, March 26, 2:45 PM–4:00 PM PCI ■ The best source of innovation is a diversity of ideas.
