CDEP provides paid internships to talented students and creates a minority talent pipeline into the energy industry. The impact of CDEP expanded in 1992 to include dual-degree programs in biology, chemistry or mathematics with partnering institutions, such as Georgia Tech, Penn State and the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Crumbly’s efforts have amassed more than $30 million in development resources for Fort Valley State and its students. In addition, he has maintained strong research credentials, completing research appointments with Oakridge National Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Dr. Crumbly has received numerous accolades for his work, including a letter of commendation from President Ronald Reagan. College of Computing, Dr. Howard has made a significant impact on intelligent systems research and engineering education. mINorITy ENGINEErING ProGram DIrECTor of THE yEar TrEmayNE o. waLLEr Director, Pre-College Initiatives and Student Transition Engineering Program, Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Diversity, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Tremayne Waller is described as “one of those special individuals that any professional educator should want on their team.” Waller obtained his B.S. from Averett University and an M.S. in counseling and human development from Radford University. In 2002, he joined the Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Diversity (CEED) at Virginia Tech, where he became director of the Pre-College Initiative Program (PCI) and the Student Transition Engineering Program (STEP). In these positions, he interacts with a diverse population of students, manages an annual budget of more than $270,000 and has expanded both programs beyond expectations. Waller’s commitment to supporting the success of minority students extends beyond his job at CEED and has even motivated him to work toward a Ph.D. in curriculum development and instruction, a degree he is expected to complete by May. He has focused his dissertation research on the retention and adjustment of engineering students in a summer bridge program and has created a support program called VT PACT geared toward African-American males in engineering. At CEED, Waller has garnered the respect of faculty and staff and is adored by students and their parents. As one student put it, “He is more than our student advisor; he is our friend, our big brother and our family away from home.” Dr. JaNICE a. LUmPkIN EDUCaTor of THE yEar ayaNNa m. HowarD, PH.D. Associate Professor, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology Dr. Ayanna Howard is truly one in a million. At the age of 30, she was listed as one of the “Top Young Innovators” by the prestigious MIT Technology Review and was also covered by Time magazine for her work in robotics. Dr. Howard received her M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Southern California, as well as an M.B.A. from Claremont Graduate University, all the while working as a full-time robotics research engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In addition to developing innovative robotic solutions for Mars Exploration and obtaining three degrees, Dr. Howard found time to inspire the next generation of engineers, especially minorities and women. She was an engineering advisor to the FIRST Robotics program, cofounder of the JPL Undergraduate Mentoring Program for Women (JUMP) and founder of the Pasadena Delta Academy, a science and math mentoring program for teen girls. In 2005, Dr. Howard joined the faculty of the Georgia Institute of Technology.
