March 25–29, 2009 Energizing Creativity to Achieve Exponential Growth Finding Career Fair Success By rachel Irving “My success story (at the 2008 Career Fair) took a long time to happen,” says Freeman, who initially applied to Boeing as a senior in college, in 2007. Eventually, she received the phone number and e-mail address of a Boeing contact and occasionally followed-up on the status of her application. “I continued to be persistent into 2008. I planned to attend my first (Annual) National Convention in Orlando and was determined to leave with a job,” she says. At the Career Fair, Freeman visited the Boeing booth. “I ended up getting an invite to their prescreening,” she relates. “I saw the Boeing employee I contacted back in 2007, and he helped me find someone who had information on my interests. I spoke to them, had my prescreening for a position, got an interview for the next day, had my interview; and about five minutes later, I got my offer!” Timothy Olaore of Hewlett-Packard took a different tack, using the element of surprise to his advantage. “The funny thing is that I’m not even an engineer…,” says Olaore. He learned about NSBE and its 2008 Career Fair through a friend who was an engineering student. “I was a marketing major but saw the opportunity of marketing myself to all these companies coming down to give African-American people jobs,” he says. Olaore decided that joining NSBE would be a good investment and drove with his friends from Huntsville, Ala., to Orlando, Fla. for the Annual National Convention. His goal was to connect with employers and have his information forwarded to the right departments. “The marketing VP from HP just happened to be helping with booth duty, and I was able to interview with him.” Within four months, he began his new job at HP. Whether through interviews, job offers or valuable contacts, the NSBE Career Fair provides countless chances to brighten your future. Continued on page 100 I n today’s tough job market, students are facing big challenges in starting their careers. With hundreds of candidates bidding for jobs, how can you compete? The Career Fair at NSBE’s Annual National Convention is one of the best opportunities for black engineering students and graduates to seek jobs, internships, graduate school programs and valuable contacts. Here, recruiters look for and expect to find students with technical and leadership skills, and unique qualifications. Recruiter Tracey Norris of Booz Allen Hamilton attended last year’s Career Fair. “We are looking for a broad selection of backgrounds,” he says. As is true for most of the exhibitors, Booz Allen Hamilton’s presence at the Career Fair is multipurpose. The company is after current candidates for employment, but it is also executing marketing and branding strategies to attract future prospects. For Booz Allen and NSBE, this has been a win-win strategy. Last year, the company was so successful at recruiting candidates — 30 new hires — that it decided to join NSBE’s Board of Corporate Affiliates. To make the most of the event, those seeking employment or academic opportunities at the Career Fair should also come with a strategy.
