NSBE - Fall 2009 - 13

thE ProgrAMs zoNE AlIgNINg WoRK AND MISSIoN By Jarrell D. Johnson, NSBE National Programs Chair N SBE family, this new year brings quality programs from which tens of thousands of members can benefit and gain experience. Our goals have been established, and together, we will work to make NSBE stronger than ever before. As an organization, we acknowledge that our programs lie at the heart of the society, and with this knowledge, the Programs Zone brings a vision that will help the organization grow to new, uncharted heights. NSBE’s programs efforts this year are connected with a single thread: the need to make significant progress toward fulfilling our mission. When addressing our current programmatic structure, we recognize our previous inability to measure our success accurately. As our society continues to grow in numbers, so should our striking impact and everlasting burning desire for positive change. At this point in our organization’s history, we must streamline our programs so they are aligned with our direction. By tightening our focus on the success of NSBE programs, we can truly accomplish our mission through our National Directives: Retention, International Development, Scholastic Achievement and Economic Empowerment (RISE). In moving forward, the Programs Zone will continue to research new opportunities that can be made available to the society. However, the team will limit the development only to programs that will actively work to develop the membership according to NSBE’s mission and National Directives. Two initiatives beginning this year are the NSBE Freshman Retention Program and the Scholastic Achievement Initiative. The purpose of the NSBE Freshman Retention Program is to address the disturbing statistics on the retention of black engineering students between their freshman and sophomore years of college. Recent research has put this number at about 50 percent. When trying to “increase the number…” our greatest opponent is this freshman retention rate, which marks the critical data point for this year’s main focus. With a membership dedicated to improving these statistics, NSBE has the ability to serve as the exemplar for black students in higher education. The Scholastic Achievement Initiative is designed to better prepare high school students for standardized exams, increase the matriculation of collegiate seniors into graduate school and address the lack of experienced engineers who are obtaining professional certifications. This initiative will take advantage of NSBE’s best practices to reduce the achievement gap between black students and their majority counterparts, in the above-mentioned areas. The Programs Zone will work to ensure that our members are able to take full advantage of the many resources within NSBE to help them become successful — academically, professionally and within their communities. With a team committed to the empowerment and betterment of the membership and the success of the organization, NSBE will see a new dawn of programming. NSBE will RISE. ■ nsbe magazine www.nsbe.org • fall 2009 • 13
