Earlier this decade, huge financial scandals at companies such as WorldCom, Tyco International and Enron Corporation led to the downfall of some of the most profitable enterprises in the U.S., which led to tighter regulation of financial affairs with laws such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. But unethical behavior within corporations has continued. Theft, violence, fraud and vandalism, as well as lesser sins such as incivility and giving false excuses for absenteeism, are causing loss of revenue, clearly making it necessary to find ways to prevent such behaviors from occurring. If external regulations are not enough to ensure ethical compliance, what is? Researchers have found that the missing link is rooted deeply in an organization’s internal norms and values: in its “ethical climate.” Organizations differ in the ways 30 • nsbe magazine in which ethical behaviors are valued and acted upon; therefore, they differ in the types of ethical climates they generate. Schminke and colleagues have stated that climates “create and define organizational values and encourage employees to hold and act upon (such) aspirations.” In other words, when a climate emerges within an organization, its employees share a collective perception of “how things are done around here.” Some climates are more positive, maximizing the interests of as many people as possible, whereas others are more negative, maximizing one’s own interests. Organizational climates, including ethical climates, drive critical organizational outcomes such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, decreased absenteeism and turnover, and increased ethical behaviors. Climates also relate to one’s attraction to an organization: When a job applicant perceives an employer to have a positive ethical climate, he or she will be more inclined to rate the organization higher on other important factors. This year’s NSBE Employer Preference (“NSBE 50”) Survey addressed this issue of ethical climate. We expected www.nsbe.org • fall 2009
