NSBE - Winter 2009/2010 - 25

chapter news On the Rebound at Ryerson W By Eric Addison hen he heard NSBE’s Annual Convention was coming to his hometown of Toronto, Aaron Haile says he thought, “Oh. That’s great.” It wasn’t until he got to this year’s NSBE convention in Las Vegas that he knew just how big the 2010 event in Toronto would be. “…Being a school in Toronto, downtown Toronto, this was a very big deal, because our members have access to this thing, and it’s literally right there in their backyard,” says Haile, who is NSBE’s 2009–10 chapter president at Ryerson University. “So it was good, one, because it was coming to Toronto, and two, (because) we could definitely use this as a tool to grow even bigger, probably the biggest we ever have…. You’re talking about 250-plus employers at a career fair. You’re talking about workshops, seminars, and all for not a lot of money at all. So it’s something we plan on using to our advantage.” The Ryerson chapter of NSBE is now in its 10th year and going through a rebuilding phase, says Haile, a senior majoring in electrical engineering who joined NSBE last fall. Haile says his school’s commuter culture poses a big challenge to successful leadership transitions. But beginning last year, under Chapter President David Momoh, he says, the NSBE @ Ryerson Executive Committee has worked hard to meet that challenge. “Ryerson is a good school as far as the engineering program goes, but as far as the campus, it’s not very cohesive. It’s a commuter school. People come and go,” Haile says. “This year we started off in the summer, getting the small stuff out of the way and getting the new officers acquainted with their responsibilities and roles. We made sure we did that over the summer, because if we waited until September it would’ve taken two or three months to get it accomplished, with the academic workload everybody has. “We also got help from the University of Toronto chapter and Canada Zone. And of course the National Executive Board is always there, and on NSBE’s website there are a lot of resources for us. We came into the school year this year knowing what each of us had to do.” Continued on page 26 MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FACULTY Kate Gleason College of Engineering The Department of Mechanical Engineering has a strong commitment to engineering education and offers B.S., M.S., and M.E. degree programs.
