chapter news Continued from page 25 The chapter’s focus this year is on retention and academic excellence programs, Haile reports. The first of a series of chapter workshops and seminars this year was titled “Study Skills/Stress Management,” held in October. “It’s about how to study smart, not just hard, and it’s not just open to engineers,” Haile says. “With our programs, we want to say, ‘Yes, we are an engineering society, but we want other Ryerson students to participate, as well.’ ” Haile says Ryerson is diverse and has “a huge black population,” although only about 7 percent of the university’s engineering students are black. NSBE, he says, enjoys strong support from Ryerson’s administration and faculty. University President Sheldon Levy and Ryerson’s new engineering dean, Mohamed Lachemi, both attended a press conference at Ryerson in September promoting NSBE’s 2010 Annual Convention. Levy, and Ryerson’s engineering department chairs, were also instrumental in getting funding for 16 NSBE @ Ryerson members to attend the 2009 convention in Las Vegas.
