NSBE Charlotte Alumni Extension

2010 AE Chapter of the Year

S

ince its inception in 2008, and despite its small size, NSBE Charlotte Alumni Extension Chapter (NSBE–CAEC) has emerged as one of the National Society of Black Engineers’ preeminent Alumni Chapters. For this reason, NSBE– CAEC, of Charlotte, N.C., was chosen as the 2010 NSBE National Alumni Chapter of the Year. The chapter received the honor on April 3, at NSBE’s 36th Annual Convention in Toronto. “It was a humbling experience and a great feeling to know that from our rechartering in 2008, we were able to grow and make an impact to many, and it didn’t go unnoticed,” says NSBE–CAEC’s 2009–11 chapter president, Tiffani Teachey. Led by the dedication and efforts of Teachey and the 2009–10 chapter vice president, Nadine Elbadramany, NSBE–CAEC has instituted a number of chapter initiatives dedicated to increasing the participation of African Americans and other underrepresented groups in the fields of engineering and technology. Although still in its infancy, NSBE–CAEC has succeeded in growing its active membership by 62 percent and has chartered two of the newest NSBE Jr. chapters: New Technology High School at Garinger and Vance High School. Moreover, NSBE–CAEC has implemented effective programs targeted at promoting professional advancement and academic excellence among pre-college students. Among these initiatives are an eMentoring program for NSBE Jr. and minority students, and hands-on “Engineering

is Fun” sessions cosponsored by the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of the USA. For professional members, NSBE–CAEC offers FE/ PE/LEED/PMP Professional Certification and Licensing sessions, as well as networking events with local minority professional organizations. NSBE–CAEC reached out to its collegiate counterpart chapters at the University of North Carolina and Johnson C. Smith University to sponsor an ongoing community service initiative with Habitat for Humanity. In 2009, NSBE– CAEC led the efforts to organize Charlotte’s inaugural A Walk for Education (AWFE). Eighty-five volunteers participated in AWFE, including local area members of NSBE, Bank of America, Girl and Boy Scouts, Charlotte Housing Authority and others. As NSBE–CAEC continues to grow and expand its programs, it will do so while adhering to its chapter objectives of: • Encouraging	and	advising	minority	youth	in their pursuit of an engineering career • Stimulating	and	developing	student	interest	in the various engineering disciplines • Developing	the	technical	and	professional	skills of its members
