From the PublicationsChair Leadership, Your Way By DaNae Grubbs NSBE National Publications Chair N SBE leadership yields unique experiences. I am certain that everyone who has served as a NSBE leader can verify that. During the past two Annual Conventions I attended, I noticed that many of the regional and national leadership positions were either uncontested or left vacant. There are plenty of leadership opportunities available within NSBE that members can take advantage of, but it appears that many are not stepping up. Why is that? Some may find joining the higher ranks of NSBE to be frightening. Others seem to think it’s impossible. Impossible? Definitely not. “NSBE leadership is what you make it.” Frightening? If you make it that. Some may also think that becoming a NSBE national or regional leader will require a lot of their time and ultimately make a damaging impact on their studies. Being able to prioritize your tasks is critical for successful participation in any extracurricular activity, and if you have not mastered that skill as a NSBE leader, your grades indeed could suffer. We are students before leaders; therefore, school should remain the highest priority. After all, we would not be NSBE members if we were not students. With any leadership position comes a great deal of responsibility. Being nervous about how you will perform is a good indication that you genuinely care about your position and the impact you could possibly make. I was faced with challenges throughout my various NSBE leadership terms, but as I reflect back on them, they weren’t anything I couldn’t handle. Overcoming those challenges has molded me into the leader I am today and has instilled in me a great deal of confidence in my leadership abilities. To get the most out of NSBE leadership, you have to want it, and shape it. It’s not about the titles or notoriety but what you can bring to 10 • nsbe magazine • fall 2011 the position to make a lasting impact on the membership and the broader society. Defining your purpose for taking the position and having a positive outlook will make your work more worthy in the end. I have learned much about myself with regard to how I interact with and motivate others, manage tasks and overcome challenges. I have also established some great relationships along the way with people I can forever call my friends. I am beyond thankful for the distinct experiences I have received as a NSBE leader. No matter how good our current leaders are, we must have a pipeline in place for our leaders of the future. I challenge you to step up to NSBE leadership! Take advantage of this opportunity to contribute to your own success, as well as the success of others in your community. You have absolutely nothing to lose and a lot to gain. NSBE leadership is what you make it. ■ www.nsbe.org http://www.nsbe.org
