InteRnAtIonAl NEWS Regional updates! Compiled by Richelle Thomas, NSBE International Committee Chair Greetings, NSBE! I am excited to serve as your 2011–12 International Committee chair. In this article, we present the recent efforts of the International Committee to expand NSBE’s membership beyond U.S. borders. We pursue the Mission by spreading “NSBE Luv” one country at a time! Please reach out to me at nebinternational@nsbe.org if you have any questions or wish to get involved with the International Committee. regIoN I HAd More FIyAH... …at the 2011 NSBE Ghana Leadership Conference! NSBE Ghana held its Third Annual Leadership Conference at Takoradi Polytechnic, Takoradi, Western Region, GhaFelix Noble Abu na on August 19–20, 2011, under the theme “Identifying the Benefits and Challenges of Ghana’s Oil Find, the Role of Engineers/Scientists and Finance Experts.” Approximately 200 pre-collegiate, collegiate and Alumni attendees heard the welcome address by NSBE Ghana’s executive director, Imoro Abdulai. Professor Michael Amankwah, lecturer and dean of students at the University of Mines and Technology, spoke about “The Need to Study Engineering.” The Rev. Ray Kotei, a teleGHANA communications engineer, presented a motivational sermon on “The Power of Small Beginnings,” in which he encouraged participants to work hard to achieve their ultimate objectives. Kenneth McGhee of Tullow Oil Ghana spoke on Community Relief Services, which assists impoverished people through education, health care, agriculture, water and sanitation. McGhee’s colleague, Dominic Agyapong, described significant activities required for the oil industry to be successful. The keynote speaker, Professor S. Mensah, is a physicist and NSBE chapter dean at the University of Cape Coast. He recently received the first-ever national award for the best scientist in Ghana. He said that for Ghana to derive maximum benefits from its oil and gas industry, it will need engineers of high moral standing who shun all acts of corruption. He stated that the contributions of NSBE members were crucial for Ghana to develop its oil industry successfully. Attendants were delighted by the program and are anticipating the 2012 Leadership Conference, to be held in August at All Nations University, in Koforidua, Ghana. This year, Region II has worked diligently to establish and reestablish international chapters, by reaching out to students in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. This outreach has included providing toolkits needed to charter chapters, distributing contact information for surrounding chapters and giving positive feedback. One NSBE International member, Simone Bertram, found there was not an active chapter near her location in West Yorkshire, England. With help from Region II, Bertram reaches out to schools in her area, telling them about the importance and benefits of being a part of a NSBE chapter. She remains optimistic that her passion will lead her to charter a chapter soon. If you are interested working with Bertram to start a chapter in England, please contact her at s.bertram3792@ student.leedsmet.ac.uk. For more information about the status of Region II’s international expansion, contact the 2011–12 Region II International chair, Shakira McCall, at r2membership@ gmail.com. 26 • nsbe magazine • Winter 2011/12 GREAT BRITAIN www.nsbe.org http://www.nsbe.org
