NSBE - Fall 2012 - (Page 24)

IN THE LEAD F The NEw Neo National Chair Calvin A. Young III, 24, is a master’s degree student in manufacturing engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University and an associate in the Operations Leadership Program at United Technologies Corporation. He has been a member of NSBE since 2006 and has held various chapter, regional and national leadership positions. Young almost dropped out of college, but because of his involvement with NSBE, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in May 2010. “NSBE gave me a family of people who understood my struggle and, more important, knew how to get me on the right path and help me eventually find success!” he says. “Now it’s my turn to give back.” 24 • nsbe magazine • fall 2012 national oFFicers 2012/2013 ounded by six college students on the campus of Purdue University in 1975, the National Society of Black Engineers has student leadership in its DNA. The elected and appointed officials of the National Executive Board (NEB) are NSBE’s top policy makers and administrators. These college students and young professionals, headed by the national executive officers, or NEO, are empowered by the Society’s tens of thousands of members to use their talent, creativity and energy toward fulfillment of NSBE’s mission. National Vice Chair Sossena Wood, 24, is a second-year graduate student in the bioengineering Ph.D. program, and a Fellow in the K. Leroy Irvis and GEM programs, at the University of Pittsburgh, where she also earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Wood, a former studentathlete, attributes her academic success at Pitt to the guidance of her parents and mentors, and her involvement in NSBE. Since her junior year in college, she has served the Society as chapter senator, chapter president, Region II vice chair and Region II chair. Now, as national vice chair, she wants to ensure that NSBE is well positioned to retain an increasing number of black engineering, science and math students through graduation. National Secretary Melanie Hazeley, 22, is a graduate student in the industrial engineering master’s program at the University of Pittsburgh, and a K. Leroy Irvis Fellow. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Hazeley got involved with NSBE during her second year in college and since then has held several chapter leadership positions, including chapter president. A passionate member of NSBE, she is devoted to encouraging the success of chapters and the development of leaders in the Society. As national secretary, she wants to continue to expand communication within NSBE and greatly increase the number of members who are informed and who participate. National Treasurer Corey E. Baker, 28, is a doctoral candidate in electrical engineering at the University of Florida and a GEM Fellow and intern at Intel Corporation. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering from San Jose State University and a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from California State University, Los Angeles and the University of Florida. Baker is a military child who calls Los Angeles, Calif., home. He joined NSBE in 2003 and has taken on numerous leadership roles. His true passion is helping others and giving back to NSBE the same way the organization has given to him: through mentoring. National Programs Chair Matthew E. McFarland, 23, is a Master of Science student in systems engineering at the University of Virginia. He comes from a family of engineers and enjoyed participating in math and science summer camps as a child. These experiences increased his interest in science, technology, engineering and math and led him to pursue a major in mechanical engineering at North Carolina State University, where he joined NSBE and became a NSBE leader. His primary goal as national programs chair this year is to enhance the quality of NSBE programs and diversify the opportunities available to NSBE members through those programs. www.nsbe.org http://www.nsbe.org
