Metropolitan Chapter) distinguished itself from the rest and was honored for its excellent work by being named National Alumni Chapter of the Year for 2011–12. The honor came last March during NSBE’s 38th Annual Convention in Pittsburgh, Pa. The AEDC was established 23 years ago in the nation’s capital and has grown to be the country’s largest 60 • CAREER ENGINEER • fall 2012 • ANd BEST I NSBE Alumni chapter. With 257 members, the chapter embraced an ambitious mission for the last program year. “Our members and leadership have always sought to tap into the strengths of (Washington, D.C.’s) unique environment in order to find innovative solutions, promote programming and support underrepresented technical professionals,” says Arthur L. Edge III, who became president of the chapter in May 2011. AEDC’s three goals for the program year were: to increase the chapter’s programs capacity by establishing or expanding a key program in each committee, while maintaining the effectiveness of current committee initiatives; to increase financial capacity by establishing funds to promote chapter sustainability and expansion of operational and programmatic budgets; and to increase membership, in terms of volume and value. EARNING ThE hONOR “As a board, we understood the need to maintain a strong outreach focus with pre-college and collegiate students,” Edge says. “We did this through a plethora of projects.
