'INSPIRATION AND SUPPORT'
In the #WhyNSBE Twitter campaign, longtime NSBE
member Amidat Sonekan of Atlanta exemplifies NSBE reach:
she started her involvement with the NSBE Jr. program in high
school and continued with the Society as a student at Georgia
Tech, where she studied materials science and engineering and
took on leadership roles at the chapter and regional level. Now,
at the Professionals level, Sonekan is passionate about helping
others succeed in STEM careers.
"NSBE provides inspiration and support and is truly passionate about increasing the number of culturally responsible Black
Engineers," she says.
Integral to NSBE's work are the Integrated Pipeline Programs
(IPPs) that keep NSBE members moving upstream. The current
IPPs include partnerships with Cummins, Inc. and Honeywell
International Inc. Diversity and inclusion initiatives by these
major organizations are aligned with the Society's mission and
its goal of expanding the pool of diverse engineering talent entering the U.S. industrial workforce. Through the IPP partnerships, these companies have made large investments in NSBE to
fund scholarship grants and academic and professional

development support for NSBE collegiate members.
NSBE's programmatic efforts are reflected in the upward
trajectory of the number of Black engineering graduates in the
U.S. in recent years: the number of Black bachelor's degree
recipients in the field climbed above 5,000 for the first time
ever in 2018, and the percentage of Blacks among the nation's
engineering baccalaureate graduates has inched up to 4.2
percent, according to the most recent report from the American
Association for Engineering Education. However, math and science proficiency rates among Black elementary school students
remain low, and increasing the retention of Black engineering
students in U.S. colleges remains a challenge. Thus, NSBE's
focus is to continuously improve the pathways from NSBE Jr.
to collegiate membership; bolster young people's engagement
in STEM with activities ranging from robotics to LEGOS; and
assist professionals with networking and career development.
Year-round programming at the chapter, regional and
national levels offers endless opportunities for personal and
professional growth; service activities to give back to the community; and acknowledgement and showcasing of academic
and technical success. ■
