In this article, NSBE's WISE Special Interest Group presents data that begin
to shed light on the state of women in STEM. This snapshot primarily
comprises all women in STEM in the U.S. When the focus is narrowed to
underrepresented minority women, the size of the problem increases.

Data Snapshot
*	 Money is being left on the table: Women in STEM jobs earn 33
percent more than their female peers in other jobs, whereas the STEM
premium for men is 25 percent. College-educated women, regardless
of undergraduate major, earn 20 percent more in STEM jobs than
elsewhere. Female STEM degree holders earn 9 percent more than
other women, regardless of the STEM degree holder's job. These are
some of the facts presented by David Beede, et al. in their 2011 report
"Women in STEM," published by the U.S. Department of Commerce
Office of the Chief Economist. As illustrated in Figure 1, within STEM
fields, engineering has a smaller wage gap between genders than any
other discipline.
*	 Women do not have proportionate representation: Although
women fill close to half of all jobs in the U.S. economy, they hold less
