Outdoor Retailer 35th Anniversary The 2000s EVERYONE'S A STAR The first helmet-mountable GoPro camera hit the market in 2004, and narcissism was never the same. Suddenly, everyday outdoor enthusiasts were rock stars and pros could produce jaw-dropping, POV footage that turned them into media brands. Post-9/11, the outdoor industry weathered the recession and continued to grow, with the military buoying brands by taking advantage of wilderness know-how to outfit troops.
