BREAD+BUTTER / Counter Culture
carrries a few items of its own design (leather
backpacks, water bottles, thermoses, shirts,
sweaters, Boulder "logo" stickers, and hats)
and mountain-inspired gifts from the Pacific
Northwest, Colorado, and Scandinavia. So,
how do you make all that work?
CURATE
The retail shop is successful because it is
heavily curated. Buyer Lauren McGowan
meticulously selects gifts that are unique, well
crafted, and have a beautiful design. While the
shop appears pricey, it does carry many items
under $30, making it an option for tourists
and Boulder locals. A popular section is the
stationery and card area, which sells unique
greeting cards, the well-known "Field Notes"
stationery, and bars from Ritual Chocolate.
COMFORT
Wood-based design goes a long way when
it comes to comfort; the shop oozes with
Scandinavian ambience. The space is well lit,
clean, and almost always smells like Colorado
Fir or Sandalwood from the candles that
Alpine Modern designs. In the center-with
inventory including Pendleton wool blankets
spread across it-sits a large, reclaimed-wood
table made locally by Tres Birds Workshop,
which gives the space a feeling of home.

features a "grab-andgo"coffee bar.
Why can't a coffee shop be a retail store? What's stopping retailers
from serving espresso? This Colorado-based space is changing the
paradigm when it comes to brick-and-mortar possibilities.

COFFEE
The sounds of the grinding of beans and smell
of coffee are hard to resist. Guests can wander around the store with espresso in small
glasses, stand with their coffees along the
soapstone bar to chat, or grab a cappuccino
to go. Regulars like the ability stop for coffee
and shop for a card, magazine, or gift. Coffee,
simultaneously, helps generate business for
the retail store: As people are waiting for their
drinks, they often find themselves perusing
the merchandise. Alpine Modern also sells
thermoses that come with a free drink upon
purchase, utilizing both aspects of the space.
ALPINE MODERN IS A LIFESTYLE AND DESIGN BRAND MANIFESTED IN A RETAIL SHOP-SLASHcoffee bar, an editorial platform, and a café. Come again? The Boulder, Colorado, business opened
in 2013 as a retailer, and then in 2014 began publishing an alpine architecture magazine, putting
out seven issues before moving online. In 2015, it expanded into an espresso bar. The retail shop
-Haley Littleton works in both coffee and
editorial at Alpine Modern. She holds an MA
in English from the University of Denver and
her thesis focused on the poetry of walking.
