on her but on the family, her staff, her management, and customers). Growing up, she
learned the speciality outdoor business at the
Round House. But since 1997, she has managed
Chalet Sports-with diehard outdoorsman

manager, however, for much, much longer. By grade school, she and her siblings
were doing menial Round House tasks. Rita
would give them a pile of stickers marked with
prices to adhere to the store's visors, Croakies,
and socks. They'd cruise around Windexing
shelves and vacuuming floors. In junior high,

they graduated to sizing and zipping clothing.
They did a lot of inventory, counting things
before there were scanners. Jennifer remembers being more invested than her siblings
("Though that could be because in high school
you're really only thinking about yourself," she
says.) Clearly, though, birth order came with
special privileges. She started attending the
SIA trade show in Las Vegas at 15 (with Rita
and Larry). Three years later, she showed the
Round House's then manager and soft goods
buyer around the show where they ogled ski celebs and Olympians. They went to dinners with
reps. They watched fashion shows and came
home with ideas.
A big aha moment for both Larry and
Jennifer came the year Swatch watches exploded onto the scene, during a show in which
Larry couldn't get an appointment with a rep.
"There were a couple of very cute guys manning
the Swatch booth," says Jennifer. Larry told her
to "go write an opening order." She waltzed over,
starting talking, and voilá Swatch watches ended up at the Round House.
Jennifer stayed active at the Round House
until she went to college in 1990. She'd start college at Gonzaga University (working, of course,
at a ski shop), and finish at MSU. She'd start relationships (personal) and end them, like you do.
But midterm break would hit, and she knew
where she'd spend her vacation-at SIA. For a
skier from Montana, it was great. "What I really
liked was knowing what was coming the next
season before anyone else did," she says. "I still
love that aspect now, but it's not without challenges. It's hard, when we start looking for new
product at the end of October, and you know
about it, and you have to come back and keep
your mouth shut because you still have all of this
year's amazing product on the floor."
After college, Jennifer veered away from
the family enterprise, which by now included
