"THEY WERE PUNK ROCK," SAYS JIM
Herrington, describing the pioneering climbers
he spent the past two decades photographing
for his new book The Climbers. It's an apt statement for Herrington, who has spent a good part
of his career shooting rock stars ranging from
Dolly Parton to Jerry Lee Lewis and creating
iconic album art along the way. But Herrington
had a fascination with the high peaks ever since
he was a small boy. He saw the climbers of the
Sierra Nevada just outside the big lights of the
entertainment industry as cultural heroes
along the lines of popular musicians, though
without the big-money contracts and main-

stream popularity. So he began to seek them
out, at first in California and then across the
globe, and capture their images. He had the
chance to visit many of them as they faded
from this world, their days on the rock long
past (he photographed Riccardo Cassin at 100
years old, just a week before the alpine legend's
death). "It's worth mentioning that they did all
of this, they climbed these difficult routes before the sport even existed," Herrington says.
This gallery is a selection from The Climbers,
published by Mountaineers Books, which won
the 2017 mountaineering history prize at the
Banff Film & Book Festival. O.R.
