Outdoor Retailer - Winter 2019 - 60

#replife: w/Erik Weber
When the ski business is in your blood, you
never forget that the most important part of life
on the road is building lasting relationships.
ERIK WEBER WAS BORN INTO THE SKI INDUSTRY. "BECOMING A
rep was an easy choice," says the lifelong shredder who has been in the
game for the past 25 years. "It's a family business for me." After all,
Weber's father came to the United States from Switzerland to sell
chairlifts across the country. He even put the first lift up in Taos, New
Mexico. While he was engaged in the business of getting the fledgling American ski industry rolling, the elder Weber met ski legend
Klaus Obermeyer, who founded Sport Obermeyer in 1947 and has
been a pioneer in the industry, introducing innovations such as the
ski brake and the quilted down jacket. Erik's dad worked as the New
York/New Jersey sales rep for Sport Obermeyer for 47 years. Erik
himself joined the family business and Obermeyer in 1993. "It's simply all about the word 'family' for me" says the Long Island-based father of two sons. "I truly mean it when I say, those I work with-both
reps and accounts-have always been and always will be my family."
What's the most fulfilling thing about being an independent rep?
The relationships, whether they be with my accounts who, as I said,
are family or the other sales reps, who make the road trips, the crazy
selling season fun and entertaining. Some of these reps have become
my closest friends over the years-not just close work friends, but
truly good friends.
While this career puts me on the road a great deal of time, it also allows for a real work/family life. And that's awesome. It meant a lot to
me growing up, and I am happy to do the same for my family.
The most challenging?
The weather! It can be our best friend or worst enemy!
What can reps do to create better relationships with the retailers
they work with?
I don't know what to tell others to do, but for me, my relationships
are paramount. Yes, product is key, but the day to day with my accounts is what matters most to me. Knowing their business, their
needs and how I can assist, and helping to make their business successful is what I stress in my daily work life.
What can retailers do better to get the most out of their reps?
Communication. Reps want a win-win situation-for them, the
brands they rep, and their accounts. So great communication is key
and vital to this happening. You need to give feedback whether good
or bad. Engage the reps. Keep reps updated as the season progresses,

How do you have a unique
perspective on the outdoor
industry?
I have literally grown up in this
AGENCY: Sport Obermeyer
industry. Some of the buyers
HOME BASE: Huntington,
and owners I work with today
New York
have known me since I was a
BRANDS HE REPS: Sport
kid. Some of their children are
Obermeyer, Chaos/ CTR, Zanier
now running the business with
gloves, GoLite
me-we all grew up and into
our positions together. I have a unique perspective in that I have a
lifetime of history, knowledge, understanding of the field. I have seen
or learned from my dad things that some reps will never experience
firsthand. It helps me to help my accounts with past, current, and
future business.
Any shops in particular where you have built lasting relationships that go beyond the business side of things?
Oh wow. I don't know if I could begin to answer that. Most of my accounts I have known pretty much my whole life. I'll get in trouble if I
don't name them all, but a few I have known for multiple generations
would be Paragon (began with Anita and Pearl), Quigley's, Ski Barn
(the Fallon family), Pedigree (Fuerst family), and Sno-Haus. While I
have been lucky to know these accounts for two generations, I've really been blessed to have worked with all of my accounts for over two
decades. It's a fact I never once take for granted.
Favorite place to play?
Well, when the home base for Obermeyer is Aspen, it doesn't get
much better than that! I love being in Aspen for meetings, whether
to ski in winter or hike in spring.
How do you live the brands you rep? What do you get out and use
that you rep?
I use my brands all the time but I would have to say my favorite place
to put them to the test is skiing with my teenage sons. To have a career where I share the mountains with my family is probably the
greatest part of what I do.
Any last words of advice for retailers looking to succeed in the
current outdoor industry climate?
Know the customers you are hoping to attract. Trying to be everything to everyone doesn't usually work out, so know your identity
and own it. Remember the basics of customer service. Giving the
customer a good experience brings them back. And talk to those who
have been doing this for a long time. I have found the most successful
want others to succeed and are willing to offer advice. Take it. O.R.
