Employees Still Matter
I FOUND MYSELF IN MACY'S THIS PAST FALL. It was not my first choice for shopping: I had to
buy a dress shirt and shoes for a wedding in a hurry, and the old big box at the nearby mall was
the easiest option. The place was empty-and already displaying Christmas decorations in early October-and I found that oddly sad. My mother worked as a sales associate at Bamberger's,
which then became Macy's, when I was growing up in the early '80s during the heyday of big
malls. The deserted store was a reminder that this type of retail is dying-upended by digital
shopping for ease and price, and beaten by independent specialty for service and soul.
Then, while browsing through Calvin Klein shirts on deep discount, I was approached by
one of the best retail employees I have ever encountered. He wore a tape measure around his
neck and called me sir, repeatedly. After taking my measurements, he assured me that I was not a
17 and definitely a 16.5. When I compared the two sizes in the dressing room, I had to admit he was
right. He sang the praises of a pair of Ecco dress shoes. At checkout, he made sure I was able to get
the sale price, even if it didn't technically start until the next day. He was a credit to the old reputation of the fading store. I might go back (just to see him, not to buy Christmas decorations).
He also made me remember how irreplaceable caring, well-trained employees can be to a
shop. And despite so many pressures on them, the best specialty retailers in the outdoor industry
will always attract and retain passionate employees who care about customers-and that is what
will keep them coming back and building the communities that big boxes and digital shops can't.
