The Backstory: Baby Detaggers
RECYCLED ROOTS
Outdoor Gear Exchange (OGE) derives its name from its original retail model, which
was selling high-end secondhand gear, from puffy down jackets to ice axes and
crampons (see "The Real Deal," page 38). Drawing on those roots in recycling, the shop
has continued to be mindful of resources, always looking to repurpose other shops'
cast-offs. When OGE moved into the Old Navy space on Burlington, Vermont's busy
pedestrian mall in 2011, owners Mike Donohue and Marc Sherman jumped through
hoops to save the old warehouse racks. Per Old Navy's demolition contract, the racks
had to be loaded on a truck and carted off, destined for the landfill. OGE arranged to
rent the exact same truck, now filled with Old Navy's old storage racks, and paid the
drivers to return to the shop the next day to unload them right back into the store.
The little headless baby, which appears to be hovering in midair in this photo,
represents that ethos. It was an Old Navy baby mannequin that OGE repurposed
by attaching a magnetic detagger, the device used to remove hard security tags.
"Those detaggers go missing all the time," says Donohue. "But we've had that one
