Find out how ingenious college students are repurposing
outdoor industry end scraps-
and score a free upcycled
chalk bag.
Spearheaded by college
senior River McKay, students
from Utah State University's
Outdoor Product Design and
Development program are
coming to Summer Market
armed with patterns, leftover
scraps, and sewing machines.
The students will create
hand-sewn chalk bags out of
old jackets, bags, tents, and
lanyards at the Show's Textile
Repurposing Station. Showgoers can grab an upcycled
chalk bag or design their own
from fabric on hand.
Igniting
a Spark
"It's material that would have
ended up in the landfill," explains McKay, who designed
the chalk bags. The school
regularly gets donations of
Cordura, Gore-Tex, knits, and
fleece from companies like
Mystery Ranch, Patagonia,
Kühl, and Cotopaxi. "We're
happy to share our creativity
and find ways to give back,"
says McKay. "The bags look
unconventional; they can
start a whole new conversation about how the industry
can repurpose waste." In fact,
if you have extra lanyards
hanging around from decades of trade shows, drop
them off at the repurposing
station to give them new life
as trim, pull cords, and harness loops. -Helen Olsson

THE RANGER STATION IS HOSTING SPARK 2020 MEET-UPS FROM NOON
to 1 p.m. every day during the Show in order to give stakeholders in the justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion community a place to gather. The daily
meet-ups are an extension of the Spark 2020 gathering held on Day Zero.
Jaylyn Gough, founder of Native Women's Wilderness, said the meet-ups
provide a needed resource at the Show. "We really want to make sure that
the BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) group and people who
feel they are a diverse group have a sense of community and a place they
can get prepped for-or, because it's a such a white, cisgendered space, we
really wanted the chance to open it up, give people space, give people tips."
The events were a welcome addition to the Show last year. "The feedback
we got from folks was that it was amazing to be able to come together and
make connections. And then see each other on the show floor and be able to
have touch points (or a friend) on the floor," said Elyse Rylander, founder of
Out There Adventures. "For me, it's kind of similar to how we approach our
outdoor programming with youth-you want to give them that one experience, but you don't want it to exist in a vacuum."
