Pausing to watch artist Lisa Kowieski paint a watercolor of the Maroon
Bells provided a moment of Zen in the midst of the Show's opening day
bustle. "I do a lot of nature-themed work, so I do a lot of mountain work,"
Kowieski said, putting a brush down to chat about art and wanderlust.
"Being from Chicago, I'm always itching for mountains and ocean."
Kowieski also does commercial design work in the outdoor industry
(which you can see on Instagram @madebylisamarie), but here at the Show,
she'll be creating six or seven watercolor and ink pieces for auction at happy
hours in Venture Out at The RANGER Station from 4:30-6 p.m.
Bonus: Kowieski is painting at Generous Coffee (booth VO223-SL) from
roughly 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, so after your respite pondering her art, you
can grab a cuppa and get back to the Show. -J.F.

TOWABLE WITH A TWIST
The thrill of tubing just went up a notch with the introduction of
the new WOW Watersports Cyclone Spinner. This large one-tothree-person tube has a circular hinge and a hover bottom, which
combine to create a tubing experience similar to your favorite carnival ride. As the tube is pulled onto either side of the boat's wake,
it spins like a cyclone. Uncoordinated wakeboarders and fun dads,

Hemp: the
strongest fiber
in the world.

POT, IT'S NOT

During World War II, the
USDA launched a "Hemp for
Victory" effort, which included a short film that encouraged farmers to grow hemp
for military needs like marine
cordage and parachutes. "It's
the longest, strongest fiber
in the world and can be used
for webbing, canvas, ropes,
twine, backpacks, and bags,"
explains Joy Beckerman, president of the Hemp Industries
Association. Beckerman will
headline the Summer Market
panel "What the Hemp?" (today, 12-1 p.m. at The Camp) to
explore the applications of this
burgeoning industry within
the outdoor space.
"Hemp is a carbon-sequestering phyto-remediating,
fast-growing plant. It's a renewable resource that, when
cultivated with regenerative agriculture techniques, can clean
and build the soil." The plant

has applications from nutrition
and wellness to textiles and
nanotechnology. Both Patagonia and Prana have already
implemented hemp as a textile
in their lines. "They're at the
forefront," says Beckerman.
Another company on the
panel is Charlotte's Web,
which grows non-GMO hemp
using sustainable practices
to make its line of CBD oils.
"The biggest misconception
about hemp-derived CBD
used to be that it's intoxicating," says Charlotte's Web
cofounder Jesse Stanley.
"Consumers are starting to
understand that they can get
the benefits of hemp's cannabinoids without that effect."
More important, says Stanley,
is that retailers understand
and support the seed-toshelf model for top-quality
CBD products. "Clean soil
should be non-negotiable
and step one in ensuring a
