IN 1970, ON THE DAY HE WAS SUPPOSED TO
graduate high school, Dean Fidelman headed
to Yosemite. He arrived with everything he had:
$20 in one pocket and a bag of weed in the other.
His first stop was Camp 4, the lawless campsite
and home to dozens of counter-culture climbers
from all over the world. Fidelman found an empty picnic table, where he rolled a joint. The pungent smoke attracted Jim Bridwell-the Lord
of Camp 4-who sat down next to him. Others
followed. His generosity led to new friendships.
The elder statesmen took him under their wings
and showed him everything. Fidelman captured
it all on his camera-the people, John Bachar's
daring free solos, Fidelman's own first (and terrifying) big wall, and even the dirty caves he sometimes lived in.

Afterward, and still in his 20s, Fidelman
studied fashion photography, heading to the
fashion capitals of New York City and Milan.
To support himself, he worked in photo labs.
" For a while, shooting fashion felt like shooting climbers, as everyone was young and doing
their thing, " he says. " I liked the people enough,
but the stuff in front of my camera wasn't what
I wanted. I knew I had to bring art to climbing.
I needed to push it in a different direction than
what was out there. "
Fidelman returned to Yosemite in the late
1990s, equipped with Charles Cole's (founder
of Five Ten) medium format Pentax camera.
He documented the next generation of climbers, including Tommy Caldwell, Chris Sharma,
Dean Potter, and Timmy O'Neill. Merging nude
photography and climbing, Fidelman produced
a yearly black-and-white calendar called Stone
Nudes for two decades.
With writer John Long, whom he met
at Suicide Rock in the early '70s, Fidelman
has produced five books, including his latest Stone Nudes: Climbing Bare. He's also the
artist-in-residence at the Yosemite Climbing
Association. Founded by climbing artifact collector Ken Yager, YCA's two museums are opening soon in both Yosemite Valley and Mariposa,
where visitors can learn about the park's rich
climbing history over the past 100 years. For
his sixth book, Fidelman plans to release a coffee table-style collection of his favorite images
displayed at the museum, with accompanying
