VOLCOM WINS DOC DESROCHES
INDUSTRY AWARD
To honor Volcom's continued support of the
U.S. Snowboard Team, SnowSports Industries
America (SIA) celebrated the brand with its
annual Doc DesRoches Award. Volcom, only
the second snowboarding company to win
the honor in the award's 16-year history, will
be providing gear and marketing services to
the U.S. Snowboard Team through the 2022
Beijing Winter Olympics.
Presenting the award, SIA president Nick
Sargent lauded Volcom's "best in class product,
best in class staff, and best in class marketing."
Ryan Immegart, Volcom's chief marketing
officer, accepted the award. "To be a part of this
brand and to be a small part of the impact on
this culture-I'm so honored," he said. "Just wait
till you see what's next. We have a lot coming
down the pipeline." -E.A.
"We're a tricky beast for reps. No one else in the industry is set up like we are," says
Black Tie Ski Rentals president Ian Prichard, whose 16 stores are all individually owned
and operated. "We're kind of a hybrid between an independent retailer and a buying
group. We show up like a giant amoeba." But longtime suppliers look forward to it.
"They're a pretty fun-loving group," says Mike Gagliardi of Never Summer Industries.
"They all come en masse, laughing and joking. It's like a huge family reunion."
At this year's show, 28 Black Tie-ers looked for products that differentiate the company from other rental outlets.
One example: heated boots. "At
first I was skeptical about how
they'd work in a rental environment," Prichard says. But new
models from companies like
Salomon and K2 have changed
that outlook. Next season, he
says, every location will have a
heated boot offering.
"We really are a huge
family," says Prichard.
"Everyone works to see
everyone else do better, and
it's great when we can all get
