On the last day of Outdoor
+ Snow Show, attendees
rallied at the Capitol.
Climate Crusaders

ltrarunner Clare Gallagher is used to standing
on top of podiums. And
when supporters hold
signs around her, they are usually
of the "hang-in-there" race encouragement variety. On this day, she
was standing near a podium, and
the signs brandished around her
had climate action messages like
"Powderful change" and "Give a
flying flake about Mother Earth."

If the Western States winner was
a little out of breath, it came from
the exertion of rousing more stoke
into the already-pumped crowd of
200 or so who had marched from
the convention center to Colorado's
Capitol on the final afternoon of
the Outdoor + Snow Show.
"Solving the climate crisis is not
going to be just like a 100-mile
race, it's going to be like a career
of 100-mile races," Gallagher told
/ OUTDOOR + SNOW SHOW 2020
the crowd. "So many steps have to
be made. So many miles have to be
run in order to actually reduce our
reliance on fossil fuels."
Gallagher's was one of many
voices at the climate rally, organized by ski mountaineer Caroline
Gleich and Outdoor Advocacy
Project founder Katie Boué. The
march and rally were an energetic
cap on a week's worth of climate
activism efforts, from Protect Our
Winters and other climate-focused
organizations as well as passionate
individuals. POW kicked off Day
1 with the launch of its Cost of
Carbon expedition calculator with
The North Face, which lets individuals footprint and buy offsets
for a trip, and a get-out-the-vote
party that included a sign-making
station for the march and rally at
the state Capitol on Day 3.

The outdoor industry pushed to move the Show from Utah to Denver due
to environmental concerns. At the January show in Denver, the industry
flexed its muscles via multiple new initiatives and a march on the Capitol.
