In Swedish, fika loosely
translates to "coffee and
cake break," but it's more
about the conversation
and connection.
Scandinavian brands continue to influence the North American outdoor industry. At the Show, attendees perused some of the region's
best offerings-and experienced fika. By Hudson Lindenberger
THE SCANDINAVIAN VILLAGE AT
the Show was the perfect place
to experience the Norse tradition
of fika-relaxing with coffee and
cake-every day at three o'clock.
But it also served another purpose.
The zone highlights the fact that
over the last decade numerous
brands from this region have
made their presence known on an
international level. Following on
the coattails of IKEA and Volvo,
their products reflect the ethos
endemic in this part of the world:
sustainability, minimalist design,
and durability.
"Everything in Scandinavia is
reflective of a deep and abiding
respect for nature and working

with it, not against it," says Sean
Tindale of Ecco. "That means
using as little as possible in design.
Simplicity and sustainability are
key. The entire culture is based on
the belief that less is more."
Products are also created to
deal with the ever changing and
shifting weather in that part of
the world. Rain, snow, and cooler
weather are prevalent, and people
expect their gear to handle it all
with ease.
As sustainability becomes
more and more ubiquitous in the
industry, many brands are looking for ways to cut down on their
waste and work with eco-friendly
products. That's something that

Nordic Nexus
has been the norm in countries like
Norway and Sweden for centuries.
"Many of the brands coming into
the American market these days
had to begin with limited resources to work with, unlike brands in
other more affluent countries," says
Adam Chamberlain of Norrøna, a
leading brand from Norway. "We
have had other companies have designs that resemble ours. We think
of it as a compliment."
Other brands featured in the
Show's Scandinavian Village included Reima, maker of high-end
children's wear that can be sent
back for recycling at the end of its
life cycle, and Cake, which has a
full lineup of electric motorcycles
and scooters that the brand hopes
will replace gas-powered bikes. As
more Scandinavian brands expand
beyond the relative seclusion of
their homelands, we'll only see the
village and its influence grow.
