An Intern's Eye
A nature-loving climber, mountain biker, and
snowboarder gets an insider's perspective on
the outdoor industry. By Kaytlyn Gilner
I WAS THRILLED WHEN I STUMBLED ON AN OPPORTUNITY TO INTERN WITH THE DAILY AT THE
Outdoor + Snow Show in January. This was my first time at the Show, and I loved spending time with
like-minded individuals, including the professional athletes and outdoor celebrities who I look up to
like Jeremy Jones, Sasha Digiulian, and Travis Rice. I worked at The Daily photo booth transcribing
interviews with show personalities. Being able to hear their stories was truly inspiring. It made me
appreciate being part of such an incredible community filled with smart, motivated, and passionate
individuals striving to not only better themselves but to unite with others and make a difference.
I grew up in Boulder, Colorado, where I was surrounded by mountains. Getting outside and
appreciating nature was just a part of what we did; it's embedded in our culture. As an avid rock
climber, snowboarder, and mountain biker, I feel most connected when I am outside with the wind
on my face, hearing the rustling of the trees, and seeing the sun peek over a mountaintop. It's how I
recharge. To me, nature makes sense in a world that rarely does.
The work that brought me to the outdoor industry is my part in co-hosting this year's Winter
Wildlands Alliance's Backcountry Film Festival in Denver (which happened on February 11 at the
Oriental Theater). For the months leading up to the Show, I had spent most of my free time promoting and approaching members of the outdoor community to gain awareness and funds. The
film festival features a collection of award-winning films about winter sports and backcountry
adventures. (Proceeds benefit two organizations dedicated to preserving our lands-the Greenway
Foundation and the Winter Wildlands Alliance.) At the Show, it was great to connect with something even bigger in winter sports, outdoor adventures, and advocacy around public lands-and to
hear first-hand from the people who are pushing the industry forward.
