iversity, equity, and
inclusion are buzzwords in the industry
these days, but real
change is a perennial challenge. Although the snowsports
industry is notoriously white
and middle class, many people
want to shift the status quo.
To learn more, we spoke with
seven leaders in the industry. We
asked them about diversity at the
management level and among
sponsored athletes, why it matters, and how as an industry we

can address the inequity. Here's
what they had to say:

brand founded in 1978
I think the lack of diversity is
a function of the history of the
industry. My parents arrived in
this country from Hong Kong
with no snowsports experience or
exposure at all. They came into
the industry via manufacturing.
My mom was one of the only
female owners and managers in
the industry in the late 1970s and
early 1980s, and certainly one of
the few non-Caucasians.
Now I see more and more
people of color, which is a reflection of our increasingly diverse
population. So, it is changing. It
takes time, experience, opportunity, and access. That last one is
the hardest, because that's where
it all begins. Snowsports require a
big investment of time and money
that inherently makes it inaccessible to many.
In science, gene diversity serves
as a way for populations to adapt
to a changing environment. I think
the same is true for our industry.
Fresh ideas, new thinking, new
adaptations-these all come from a
diversity of participants.
Also, as a parent, I often think
about the importance of modeling
behavior. When children see a
successful athlete or professional
of color and/or from the LGBTQ
community, it shows them that
