Be sure to catch the panel headlined by the man Outside magazine recently called
"The Guru of Outdoor Retail." Bryce Phillips founded Evo in 2001 after buying and
selling gear in order to support a snow habit that started in fifth grade. In 2005,
amid healthy online growth, he decided to open a brick-and-mortar shop in Seattle. Outposts in Denver, Portland, and Whistler soon followed.
"I felt like there was a void in the retail market," Phillips says. It needed art,
music, community, and a place where everyone, regardless of their background, knowledge of, or ability in a certain sport could come together. "Inclusivity is in our DNA," he says. "I mean, our skate park [in Seattle] is literally
called 'All Together.'" Inclusivity is even more important now than ever, as outdoor customers become more diverse. Phillips will share his ideas on how other
shops and brands can "leverage a bunch of ideas that encapsulate the common
thread of giving back, putting good into the world, bringing new people into
the fold [of outdoor sports], and remaining in a constant state of evolution."
The panel, "Building Community: How To Be Relevant in the 21st Century," that
will include Phillips will be held Jan. 30, from 12 to 1 p.m. at The Camp. -T.R.

amount of wasted material is staggering. Student designers from Utah
State University's Outdoor Product
Design & Development program will
be onsite at The RANGER Station upcycling scrap materials into functional
and beautiful designs. Come by and
learn about the power of upcycling
and watch the OPDD students turn
wasted materials into repurposed
neck gaiters and goggle bags.
