THE RESORT:
EASIER AND THINNER
With participation numbers flat
over the longterm in snowsports,
brands are introducing skis that
make shredding easier. Elan's
Wingman (44020-UL) employs
a design built for the masses: a
slightly wider ski with freeride
aesthetics but all-mountain performance. "The ski takes design inspiration from freeride, but includes
all-mountain technologies like
Truline's carbon reinforcements
for energy transfer, strength, and
stability," says Elan president Jeff
Mechura. Meanwhile, Blizzard
(32005-UL) will focus on flex for
varying terrain. "Not every day is a
powder day or perfectly groomed,"
says spokesperson Maro LaBlance,
touting the brand's new all-mountain freeride collection, with
familiar names-Cochise, Bonafide, Brahma, and Black Pearl.
Each employs TrueBlend Flipcore,
layering various woods down the
length and across the width like a
grid for a natural flex.
Don't worry. There will still be
plenty of hardcore hardware to
ogle. Dynafit (31055-UL) hops on
the freeride wagon with its M-Free
108, whose progressive shape and
paulownia and PU Hybrid Core provides pop and recoil when going big.
Available in 172, 182 and 192cm, its
108mm waist hits the sweet spot of
all-mountain versatility. Meanwhile,
Nordica (35004-UL) is heading to
the show with new shapes, constructions, and sizes specifically for
women. "We enhanced the layup
with terrain-specific metal (TSM)
sized to each ski based on width and
intended use," says Nordica marketing director Sam Beck, adding
that the metal layer varies as far as
how far it extends to the edges. The
line includes the 104 and 110 for
soft snow and the 88, 93, and 98 for
all-mountain ripping.
And skis continue to slim down.

62

Head (32019-UL) is narrowing
widths and reducing weight in the
new KORE 87 and 87 W, blending
superlight construction with performance and stability. "You don't see
as many offers above 120mm as you
did 10 years ago - those skis don't
move well at retail," says marketing
director Andrew Couperthwait.
"The average consumer is often on a
ski that is too wide."

BACKCOUNTRY:
MAKE IT EASY TO BE
SAFE-AND FAST
With more and more skiers and
riders interested in finding the
untracked away from the resort,
alpine brands continue to embrace
AT. Dalbello (31009-UL) will be
introducing its Quantum Series,
whose Bonded Shell tech is injected in two lengthwise sections,
bonded via infrared welding, for
better contour and fit. The Asolo
Factory model weighs 980 grams,
with a Grilamid shell reinforced
with long-fiber carbon. And resort
uphill skiing and AT racing continue to trend up. Italian bootmaker
Scarpa (35031-UL) combines
ultralight elements from its Alien
race boots with a versatile, backcountry-oriented design in its
lightest weight AT boot yet, the F1
LT, tipping the scales at just 990
grams. It features a Grid Frame
Tech cuff that stiffens the shell and
increases power. "It represents the
new world order in boots designed
to go uphill and down," says
Scarpa NA CEO Kim Miller. And
DPS's (37058-UL) new lightweight
but powerful Pagoda line is meant
to make skiing the backcountry
easier for everyone.
Avalanche safety gear and
education is mandatory in the
backcountry and manufacturers
are looking to make gear more
user friendly. The Tracker S is
BCA's (34105-UL) most streamlined transceiver yet and features
real-time display, "pitbull" signal
locking, and no-nonsense multiple-burial searching. "We removed

/ OUTDOOR + SNOW SHOW 2020

some of the high-end features
that only professionals need and
reinforced ease-of-use," says BCA's
Bruce Edgerly. And it rings up at
just $300. The most intriguing
piece of gear that will be on display at the show is the Avametrix

AvyScanner Avalanche Predictor

(31159-UL). This innovative safety
device uses radar and artificial

neural network technology to scan
the snow and highlight the weak
layers that are likely to produce
human-triggered avalanches-and
it fits in your pocket. "All current
avalanche safety devices are for trying to save a victim after a slide," the
brand says. "The AvyScanner detects snowpack instability to avoid
an avalanche in the first place."

The Scout can
customize your ski
tune to your individual mechanics.

TUNE IT UP
Wintersteiger's small-footprint Scout is giving the U.S. Ski Team-
and ordinary skiers-personalized tunes. See it in action at the show.
The product you most need to see at the show is pretty big-but it's
also the smallest automated footprint ski-tune machine that Wintersteiger has created. Don't let that discourage you, however; the new
Scout Plus has already produced big results for the U.S. Ski Team.
Even better, the smaller footprint means that retailers who have not
considered a ski-tuning machine before can now get in the game.
Partnering with US Ski & Snowboard, Winterstiger put the Scout
Plus, which was introduced in 2018, to the test at the Copper Mountain Tech and Speed Centers in November. The brand and coaches
assessed athlete mechanics and translated that info to ski tunes.
They found that over 60% of the athletes' skis needed some adjustment or modification. They then corrected issues affecting flatness,
structure, and edge angles. Translation: Not only can the machine
help score World Cup wins, it can also improve the ride for everyday
skiers who come into your shop.
"The Scout has filled a much-needed niche in our market," says Stan
Woliner, Wintersteiger sales director. "At the 2020 Outdoor + Snow
Show, we will be rolling out new, racing-derived features to help our
retail partners achieve the highest quality finish for all their customers,
whether they're racing or just having fun."
Wintersteiger will hold demonstrations-including modules on disc
edge finish, polish, and one on the Scout and ski team project-
at Outdoor + Snow Show. Stop by Booth 32055-UL for times.
