THE 8,000-METER CONCEPT WAS THE
brainchild of Mark Fulton, a longtime rep for JanSport and other outdoor brands. In 1995, he and friends
decided to try to tick off the three
peaks in one day. They had so much
fun that the next year, Fulton made
it an official event open to the people
who meant the most to him-outdoor
shop employees.
"My dad appreciated the retail staff,"
says Mark's son, Miles, who now heads
up the challenge. "He also noticed
there sometimes was a disconnect
with their gear knowledge. Beyond
clinics, he wanted to figure out what
else he could do for them. And, what's
better than firsthand experience? So
he put together this crazy challenge.

different boots and packs, figuring out
what shirt would work for them,
if they wanted to use trekking poles
or not, what type of water filter to
carry-everything they're selling in
their stores."
For the first challenge, Mark convinced 17 people from three Southern
California shops to participate. This
time, 135 individuals set out for Baldy
with 82 completing all three peaks.
The teams set a new record by raising
more than $30,000 for BCM. Mark
Fulton died of a rare blood disease in
2011, but the 8,000 Meter Challenge
has continued to grow.
"It's being able to share these stories
that say I'm authentic to the outdoors
that makes our customers come back,"
says Cyndi Wyatt, sales lead at REI in
Burbank, California, who, after seven
consecutive years finishing as the top
woman, opted to serve as a volunteer
this year. "I never met Mark in person,"
she says. "But he speaks to me during
the Challenge, telling me 'uncomfortable' is the new comfort level."
Known for his natural ability to connect with others and convince them to
join his adventures, Mark was a proponent of the phrase, "Be comfortable
with the uncomfortable." The words
have remained a motivator for participants on the trail and back at the store.
"It's the best family. We've all
shared something brutal," Wyatt says.
"It doesn't matter what store you are
at. We all have a common goal. We
really just want to get other people to
make the outdoors a lifestyle."
