ON MAY 8, 2020, WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN AHMAUD ARBERY'S 26TH
birthday, thousands of people took to streets and trails to run 2.23 miles
in his memory, posting photos with hashtags #IRunWithMaud and #RunWithMaud as a demonstration of support and a rallying cry for justice.
The initiative was launched by Jason Vaughn, Arbery's high school football
coach. People from all backgrounds came together via the internet to
advocate for the black man who was shot by a white father and son while
on a run in Glynn County, Georgia, in February.
Many athletes of color, like African American ultrarunner and bodypositive activist Latoya Shauntay Snell, aka "Running Fat Chef," want
to see the support move beyond a hashtag. "Although it was refreshing
to see all walks of life take on 2.23 miles-or, in my case, requesting
some of my audience think outside the box on creative ways to honor
Ahmaud Arbery-I cannot express how many black people expect
the inevitable, to be forgotten once again," she says. "As brands push
toward positive messaging and emphasize speaking on diversity
and inclusion, I hope they understand the power of uniting with
oppressed communities."
Snell insists people and brands must engage with her community
beyond this moment. "Learn our hardships and be proactive in telling our stories," she says. "Brainstorm and work with people who are
in the thick of these situations." -Latria Graham
