CLIMBING TURNS 50

The iconic publication takes a look back at a half-century of vertical
ascents and the colorful people who make them.
This spring, with its staff working from home in Boulder, Colorado,
Climbing magazine put out Issue 372, marking 50 years in business.
As an homage to the visionary writers who came before, longtime editor Matt Samet posted Issue 1 (May 1970) online, making it
available for free download. This first issue consisted of 25 staplebound pages and featured stories on Colorado's Black Canyon and
Hetch Hetchy in California (outside Yosemite). The cover featured
an unnamed climber on a 5.7 route on a sandstone tower in Garden
of the Gods, Colorado. The issue price: 78 cents.
"It's exciting to be the editor as Climbing clocks its 50th anniversary this year-a huge milestone, especially for such a niche publication," Samet says. "The current issue has a lot of varied content, but
what stood out perhaps the most was the special Talk of the Crag
news section, in which writers looked back at the evolution of the
sport over the past half-century."
As a climber since the early 1990s, I grew up collecting every issue of Climbing and reading it from cover to cover. I still have boxes
of these old issues in my garage. I was so inspired by Climbing that
I worked there back when the magazine was based in Carbondale,
Colorado. Working there launched my career. In September 2018, in
anticipation of the 50th anniversary, Samet and I released the book
Vantage Point: 50 Years of the Best Climbing Stories Ever Told.
Climbing's 50th-anniversary issue features Tommy Caldwell on
his latest first free ascent on El Capitan, Passage to Freedom (5.13+),
which he completed with Alex Honnold. Also inside are the annual
Gear Guide, a piece on eating disorders (which has long been the
"third rail of climbing journalism," Samet wrote in his editor's note),
and a feature on climbing in Bali.
